The entire cinema financing circuit is taking water, but the State and its armed wing, the CNC, are there to suffer.
The cultural exception, far from being a slogan, is above all a financing mechanism based on taxes levied on theaters, television channels, telecom operators and soon SVOD platforms.
The first source is the tax on cinema tickets.
It normally brings in around 140 million euros.
But with the 70% drop in attendance, the product should fall to 45 million euros in 2020. The tax levied on TV channels (around 300 million) should fall to reflect the decline in advertising revenues of the channels .
Only the telecoms tax should remain stable at around 215 million euros.
In total, the shortfall should amount to around 160 million euros for the sector.
It is as much money which would run out for the financing of the films to come.
