An unusual subject jumped in front of the camera for a Canadian wildlife photographer: a young deer with an arrow sticking out of its head. The animal was evidently not impressed.

At first glance the photo looks like a montage: It shows a deer that is apparently in excellent health.

But a long arrow protrudes from his head.

Wildlife photographer Lee-Ann Carver shared the picture on Facebook, hoping to help the animal with it.

She was very worried about the stag, which she christened "Carrot", in German carrot, she wrote there.

"It's really hard to see," Carver told the British Guardian.

The young stag has been coming to the garden of her house in Ontario, Canada, for three years, Carver continued.

Last week, her husband saw that the animal was injured.

She was very shocked at the sight of him, said Carver.

The arrow was stuck in his skull.

"But he pretended nothing had happened." How the animal got the injury is unclear.

Photographer Carver apparently had a special connection with the deer even before the accident.

She has been photographing wildlife for a long time, she told the Guardian.

"Carrot" is especially trusting and affectionate.

"He's different from any other deer before," says Carver of the animal.

Although it is a dangerous procedure for the animal, wildlife specialists have now removed the arrow.

Videos on Facebook show how the helpers stun the deer and then treat it.

According to Carver, the next few days are now decisive for "Carrot": A wound infection could be life-threatening, but the stress caused by the treatment also represents a serious burden for the animal, according to Carver.
