Thousands of truck drivers are still waiting to finally cross the border between Great Britain and the EU.
This has been open again since Wednesday, but the backwater near the southern English city of Dover is gigantic.
For many truckers, this means that they will spend Christmas Eve on the motorway - without toilets and enough food.
Francisco Moreno, truck driver
“I had to ration my water because I don't have much. This also applies to food. I've never lived like this before. I've never seen a situation like this before. "
Carlos, truck driver
»Our toilets? Right here, nature is our toilet. The situation here on site is chaotic. We were hoping we could go to see our families, but we're stuck here. Nobody cares about us. So we'll be spending Christmas with our trucker colleagues. "
France had closed the border with Great Britain on Monday night.
The reason is the mutation of the coronavirus that occurred in the UK and is spreading quickly there.
The border closure should prevent the mutation from being carried into the EU.
In order to be able to enter, the drivers now have to show a negative corona test, which is also why there were traffic jams for miles.
Because of the long waiting times and poor supply, there have been repeated clashes with the police in the past few days.
At least one man has been arrested, according to British authorities.
In order to be able to enter, the drivers must have a negative Corona test.
So that as many truckers as possible can return home as soon as possible, the British-French border at the Eurotunnel should remain open over Christmas - most of them will still not make it to their families in time.
