VIDEO. Czech freediver trains to swim under 30cm of ice to break world record

2021-02-14T16:34:40.124Z

Diver David Vencl will try to enter the Guinness World Records by swimming at least 80 meters in apnea under the ice.

Swim as long as possible, in apnea, under a thick layer of ice.

This is the crazy challenge launched by David Vencl, Czech diver, already holder of the static apnea record in his country (7 minutes 54 seconds).

Taking advantage of the winter temperatures, he trains in a lake in Teplice, Czech Republic to try to beat the world record for diving under ice, set at 76.2 meters by Dane Stig Severinsen.

Thick ice ... or not: what to know before walking on a frozen lake

Baths in salt water at -4 ° C on your balcony, snow shower, light clothing, even in freezing temperatures… If this dive is extreme, so is the training.

Safety rules are not set aside.

Throughout his swim under the minimum 30 cm of ice imposed by the Guinness office, the diver will be guided by a rope connecting the entry points underwater.

David Vencl will try, probably next month, to break the record for swimming under ice in Austria, if restrictions linked to the pandemic allow it, or in a lake in the Czech Republic.
