VIDEO. Miami: a floating villa to adapt to the rising waters

2021-02-20T18:31:21.281Z

In the United States, the islands and coasts of Florida are directly threatened by rising sea levels, caused by global warming.

To adapt to the rising waters, Nicolas Derouin decided to put his feet in the water… And the houses too.

His company Arkup has built a new kind of villa in Miami.

Luxurious, self-sufficient in energy, but above all floating, the villa is supported by pillars directly immersed in the water.

The goal?

Allow the population of Miami to continue to live in the city despite the frequent floods, by developing this model of house in the territory.

Because in Florida, the consequences of climate change are clearly visible.

This part of the United States is particularly exposed to the gradual rise in water levels and to flooding due to increasingly high tides.

According to the UCS (Union of Concerned Scientists), 64,000 homes are at risk of being regularly flooded by 2045.

For Nicolas Derouin, the change of presidency at the White House is going in the right direction: “For us, the change of administration in the United States is a positive sign, because it brings hope, because it puts more emphasis on climate change and environmental protection ”.
