About fifty flamingos, from a nature reserve in Greece, were found dead with lead in their stomachs. The road is nicknamed "the street of pink flamingos" by residents. In Agios Mamas, a lagoon in northern Greece, Stavros Kalpakis walks along this road, along the tall reeds, while looking through his binoculars.

The environmental activist puts on his waterproof boots and enters the water that reaches him up to his knees.

A few minutes later, he comes out with an inanimate flamingo - one of dozens found dead from lead poison in recent weeks.

Of the dozen flamingos recovered by the NGO for treatment, none could be saved.

"The flamingos eat small stones to facilitate their digestion, and they can swallow shards of cartridges at that time, it poisons them with lead", explains Ellie Bridgeman, an English volunteer working with the association.

Agios Mamas is part of the Natura 2000 network, which brings together the most biodiverse sites in Europe, and is home to nearly 60 different bird species.

Flamingos even bred here last year, a first in Greece.

"It would be really disappointing if such a positive development were destroyed by the insistence of some of our fellow citizens to flout environmental regulations," said Anna Panagiotou, head of the management authority for protected sites in the Gulf of Thermaikos.

Especially since lead shots in wetlands has been an illegal practice in Greece since 2013.
