(ANSA) - CAIRO, MARCH 27 - At least 8 people died and another 24 were injured this morning in a collapsed building, probably due to an explosion in an alpine dairy, in a popular area of Cairo, according to what was reported by the governorate.
"The governorate crisis room was informed at 3am of the collapse of a building consisting of a basement, a ground floor and 10 floors" in the Gesr Suez district, east of Cairo, a statement said.
The final toll could be more serious.
"Khaled Abdel Aal, the governor, immediately went to the scene of the accident accompanied by the civil protection forces", the statement continues.
He ordered "the formation of a committee of experts" to inspect the surrounding buildings and assess the impact of the accident.
It is assumed that the collapse is due to an explosion that took place in a factory located on the ground floor.
Civil Protection forces continue their efforts to find more victims under the rubble.
