You have to let this natural spectacle work on you first.

Thousands of Icelanders flock to Fagradalsfjall volcano every day.

Gunnar Freyr, photographer:

“It's so nice to be here with so many people.

After the past year, it is unreal to be surrounded by so many people.

For me and many others, it's just nice to experience community again.

Going out helps you forget the whole pandemic and all that is going on. "

The volcano near Reykjavík erupted on March 19th.

Since then, the lava flows and the seething crater have attracted tourists, scientists and photographers almost magically.

Eli Bjorg Gudmundsdottir, photographer:

“Breathtaking, incredible.

This is my third time here and it has changed every time I come back.

The first time you could go straight to the crater, you could stand at the root of the crater and be one with the volcano, so to speak.

A short time later, the area filled with solidified lava.

You couldn't go there anymore.

And now there is a mountain.

It's insane. "

For many, the natural spectacle is a welcome distraction in the corona pandemic.

To cope with the rush, the authorities have set up a hiking trail.

Patrols are designed to prevent onlookers from entering dangerous areas.

How long the spectacle will last is unclear.

Volcanologists say Fagradalsfjall could soon stop spewing lava - or continue to do so for decades.
