It had remained calm for decades, now the Caribbean volcano La Soufrière is erupting again.
The volcano is located on the island of St. Vincent in the Caribbean, north of Venezuela.
Surrounding towns had to be evacuated since the first outbreak on Friday morning, and cruise ships also helped with the first evacuation measures.
A total of around 16,000 people have to leave their homes.
The island was divided into several danger zones.
When La Soufrière erupted around 120 years ago, 1,600 people died on the island.
The volcano last erupted in 1979 and caused damage of around $ 100 million at the time.
The current eruptions are causing a huge column of ash.
Eyewitness
»This morning I was still in the orange zone, now I'm in the green zone. And from here, too, I can see the smoke and ashes. "
According to seismologists, it extends seven to ten kilometers high.
Robertson S. Henry, Journalist and Eyewitness
“I know where the volcano, the summit, and the crater are.
I couldn't make out her anymore.
It was all just dark.
And then at some point you felt something touch your skin.
Ash."
Scientists are warning of further eruptions.
Authorities have started setting up emergency shelters and handing out respirators to residents.
According to the government, the situation is expected to last for months.
