Six days that the fire is raging.

A Singapore-registered chemical container ship has been in flames for nearly a week near Colombo, the capital of Sri Lanka.

The MV X-Press Pearl from the Indian state of Gujarat was en route to Colombo when fire broke out on the bridge 14 km off the coast on May 20.

A chemical explosion would have revived the fire on Tuesday, five days later.

The Navy specifies that strong gusts of wind hampered the fight against the fire carried out by its tugs and gunboats.

Three Indian Coast Guard ships were due to join the efforts on Wednesday.

Neighboring India has already sent a ship and a plane the day before to assess the damage and coordinate efforts to fight the blaze.

The ship carried some 25 tons of nitric acid, among other chemicals and cosmetics, according to the Sri Lankan Navy.

All 25 of her crew were safely evacuated, but one member had to be hospitalized with minor injuries.

The Marine Environment Protection Authority has mobilized personnel to respond to a possible oil spill and pollution of toxic materials from the ship. Eight of the approximately 1,500 containers transported fell in the Indian Ocean on Tuesday, she said.
