Weather forecast: an exceptionally hot month of July, a world record under debate

As heat wave episodes multiply across the planet, the US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Agency notes this recor

Never seen.

While France had a month of July far from summer, many areas of the globe experienced unprecedented temperatures.

For the US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Agency, the finding is clear: July 2021 was the hottest month ever recorded on Earth.

A record that is however debated in Europe.

This month of July has the highest global temperature on the planet's surface (recorded for 142 years), with + 0.01 ° C compared to the previous hottest months of July, in 2016, 2019 and 2020. " The first place is the worst here, ”the head of the so-called NOAA Agency, Rick Spinrad, said in a statement. "July is generally the hottest month of the year, but July 2021 has surpassed itself, becoming July and the hottest month on record."

"This new record adds to the worrying and disturbing trajectory on which climate change has put the globe," he added.

On Twitter, the agency details: “In July 2021, the global surface temperature was 1.67 ° F (0.93 ° C) above average, making it the hottest July. registered to date ”.

Their map shows records recorded in many areas: in North America, central Europe, China, and even in oceans like the Atlantic.

However, the European Copernicus Climate Change Service estimated last week that July 2021 was the third hottest July on Earth.

Global warming is accelerating

The US Agency press release featured a collage of photos depicting the disastrous effects of climate change, including flooding, heat waves, drought, hurricanes and wildfires.

This year, many countries are experiencing episodes of unprecedented heatwaves.

The images that call out the most are those of the fires that we have seen in Canada, Tunisia, Algeria, Greece, or more recently in Italy and Spain.

Scientists believe that these events are the product of global warming and that heat waves are expected to multiply, lengthen and intensify.

A constant shared by the UN. Four days ago, the organization published an alarming scientific report: global warming could reach the threshold of + 1.5 ° C around 2030, ten years earlier than estimated. The IPCC warns that heat waves, floods and other extreme events will increase. This will be “unprecedented” in terms of the scale, frequency or time of year they strike. UN Secretary-General António Guterres called his results a “code red for humanity”, saying “the alarm bells are deaf and the evidence is irrefutable”.
