Michael Moshonov: "It was the Corona that made it clear that there was a future for theater." Israel today

2022-03-28T13:17:35.367Z

He plays with his father, Moni, and with Braba in the play "The Comedians", works for a new album and now also plays in a new children's play

He has acted in films such as "Lost Islands" and "Lebanon", in series such as "Neighborhood" and in theater performances such as "The Comedians" of the Haifa Theater, where he plays alongside his father, Moni Moshonov, and Shlomo Braba.

Now Michael Moshonov (36) is starring in a children's play, "Butterflies in the Head," which will open the Haifa International Festival of Children's Plays on Passover.

The play, written and directed by Zivia Huberman, combines songs by Naomi Shemer (under the musical direction of Lior Ronen) and tells the story of Guy, an extraordinary boy who finds it difficult to adapt to the school setting.

One day a substitute teacher arrives with a captivating personality (Moshonov), who manages with the help of humor and sensitivity to bring about change in Guy's life.

"I have been at the Haifa Theater for six years, and this is the first time I have participated in the children's play festival," says Moshonov.

"I really like and appreciate this festival. For me it is also closing the circle, because 15 years ago I played at the Orna Porat Theater for children and youth, and the one who gave me the first opportunity to take the stage was Zivia Huberman. When she turned to me now and let me read the play 'Butterflies In my head, it was clear to me that I agreed.

"I play the yo-yo teacher. Another, cool teacher, and that makes a kid who feels very outsider try to be a part. As a kid with learning disabilities I remember I had a teacher come into class on a skateboard, and it bought me. It was very hard for me as a kid to learn. Suddenly, "When I play the teacher, I have a personal circle in front of a charming actor named Yaniv Shavit, who plays the child."

According to Moshonov, "something very interesting happened in Corona. I feel that suddenly there is a very strong future for theater, precisely because the other media have become more accessible. Today you can see cinema at home, and suddenly see something live on stage - more exciting."

What is it like to be with Dad and Brava on stage in "The Comedians"?

"I was very apprehensive about playing with them in the show. It honestly put me in a hot spot and reveals all the things that are hard for me to deal with anyway, of the comparisons and 'son of'. Beyond that, these are two huge comedians, and how can I fit in? It's the fact that I played in Neil Simon's Brighton Beach Diary, and I knew I liked his material. I also knew director Ilan Ronen would be sensitive with me. "There are pieces that really connect to reality, and as my dad says there, you do not know where the sketches end and life begins. For me to be with them on stage is a school. It's inspiring to see people their age with such a great passion for their profession."

At the same time, Moshonov cultivates his music.

He performs the song "The Last War" with his sister, opera singer Alma Moshonov, as part of the album "My Word", which includes songs by Hanoch Levin.

He is also working on a new album.

"I started working on the album with Joe Naveh, who produced Fortis' latest album," he says.

And if that's not enough, then Moshonov Jr. also serves as ambassador for the Garage School, an art school for young people facing mental crises.

"I give classes and artist meetings there, and help them with a mass recruitment campaign to build a special structure," he says.
