Almost all of us love sweets and even those who are not sure are familiar with the M & M's snacks that have been on the shelves since 1941 - candies in different colors, the difference between them is in their content.

Today, M & M's sweets made with chocolate, peanuts, almonds, peanut butter, milk jam, rice crackers, pretzels and more are produced.

All the M & M's have the letter M painted on them, but have you ever wondered what the letter and name mean?

As most of us know, M & M's snacks are made by the manufacturer that brought us the "March" snack - the familiar and delicious chocolate with caramel, so you may have guessed that at least one of them is in honor of the company that makes the candy - March, but what does the other M mean?

It turns out that the candies are based on an older British brand, Smarties.

During the Spanish Civil War in the late 1930s, the son of the founder of Mars, Forrest Mars, met American soldiers who were enthusiastic about British candy, due to the fact that the sugar in which it is coated prevents the chocolate from sticking to their fingers.

He wanted to emulate the success and came out with his own version of the candy, but since in the United States there was already a candy called "Smarties", he nalled.

Choose another name.

The name chosen, M&M, means "March and Marie".

So March is indeed one of the Ms but who is Marie?

So like that, Forrest March, the son of Frank March who founded the company, got into his father's business and took over slowly.

He changed the company name to Mars, Inc. and decided to enlist the help of his competitor from Hershey to help his company and went to William Marie's office.

The two began collaborating and Forrest entered into a partnership with Marie's son, which spawned the M & M's brand.

The first M in March's name and the second in the name of Bruce Marie, William's son.

M & M's were first launched in 1941 when the original color of chocolate was brown and the product was initially intended for the US Army in World War II.

• M & M's became the first candy in space when it was chosen by the astronauts of the first space shuttle in 1980 to be included in their food supply.

• In 1995, MARS conducted a survey in which the American public was asked to determine the new color to be added to the other colors.

  About 10 million people participated in the poll and the color blue was chosen by a majority of 54%;

• In 2002, a global survey was conducted in which the color purple was chosen;

• In 2008, faces were launched for each of M & M’s candies, allowing customers to connect to the personality of their candy;

• In 2017, M & M's caramel candies were launched and they also arrived in India, 75 years after they started selling in the US;

• M & M's is the fastest growing brand in the snack segment in Israel, the brand's sales increased by 13% this year compared to last year, while the entire snack segment was down 4%, according to Storenext data.
