Female journalists are more likely to be in management positions in German broadcasting than they were years ago. However, equality is only achieved in a few houses.

The proportion of women in journalistic management positions in broadcasting in Germany has increased over the past three years.

This was announced by the association ProQuote Medien, which has been committed to getting more women into top journalistic jobs since it was founded in 2012.

A proportion of 50 percent each for men and women is only achieved in a few stations, according to a statement on the ProQuote evaluation.

In the area of sports reporting, for example, the difference compared to the figures collected for the first time in 2018 is still large.

According to this, in 2021 an average of almost 44.7 percent of the positions in program and editorial responsibility at the public broadcasters and at Deutsche Welle were held by women – weighted, i.e. evaluated separately according to hierarchical level, the figure was 43.4 percent.

In 2018, the average share was still 37.7 percent.

According to the information, the top four hierarchical levels were surveyed.

Top ratings for RBB and Deutsche Welle

The gender parity required by ProQuote was met by two houses, Rundfunk Berlin-Brandenburg RBB (57.4 percent) and Deutsche Welle (50.8 percent).

With the exception of Hessischer Rundfunk HR (29.4 percent) and Saarländischer Rundfunk SR (36.1 percent), according to the ProQuote count, all public broadcasters have at least 40 percent women in journalistic leadership positions.

The ProQuote count was based on organizational charts and self-disclosures from the eleven public broadcasters and Deutsche Welle.

According to the information, the private broadcaster did not provide any organizational charts.

However, publicly available information suggests that the proportion of women in management at RTL, for example, has fallen further in the course of the merger with Gruner + Jahr, and women are hardly represented in program-related top management at just 13.8 percent.

“We're pleased to see how far some broadcasters have come on their way to parity.

This is an encouraging signal," said Edith Heitkamper, Chair of ProQuote Medien, in the statement: "Equality and diversity are not, however, a natural part of corporate culture everywhere.

They have to be lived and not just written on paper.«
