June 8 is World Oceans Day, announced by the United Nations in 1992 in Rio de Janeiro at the Global Forum, an event parallel to the UN Conference on Environment and Development which offered the opportunity to non-governmental organizations and civil society to express their point of view on environmental issues.
This year's slogan is "Revitalization: Collective Action for the Ocean," which calls each in their own small way to repair the damage humanity continues to inflict on marine life and the livelihoods the ocean provides.
And this is also the focus of the second United Nations Conference on the Ocean, hosted in Lisbon from 27 June to 1 July by the governments of Kenya and Portugal.
Ocean protection is also included in Goal 14 of the United Nations 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development: to conserve and use the world's oceans, seas and marine resources.
To support countries in this goal, the UN has proclaimed the Decade of Ocean Sciences for Sustainable Development (2021-2030).
