Quite a few parents of babies hear that their child has a tongue attached, and are referred for treatment, but the truth is that this is not just a problem of babies, and it also affects adults, without them knowing it at all.

Dr. Eyal Butzer, director of an affiliated language clinic at Ichilov Hospital, was a guest on the "Specialist Clinic" podcast to explain exactly what the story of language is, and how it affects our overall health.

Let's start with the basic explanation: Under our tongue there is a small string that restricts the movement of the tongue in a reasonable way, in most cases.

"The definition of a related tongue is when it is accompanied by a functional problem, when the tongue is dysfunctional, and perhaps also the whole mouth," explains Dr. Butzer, adding that the dysfunction of the mouth affects a lot of other things.

A related tongue is usually identified when the baby is unable to breastfeed, or when the mother is in great pain while breastfeeding as the baby does not connect well to the breast.

In non-breastfed infants the diagnosis is usually delayed, as the bottle does not suffer from pain, but even in infants fed from a bottle there is a health effect of related tongue, like the entry of a lot of air.

"The baby will eat and grow and open, but will cry a lot, there will be gas and there will be a lot of symptoms of dysfunction of the mouth," Dr. Butzer explained.

How does related language affect the health of adults?

It is important to clarify that a tongue can not function well even if the anatomy looks good, that is, if the associated tongue is not clearly seen.

The effects of dysfunction are manifested in almost all body systems - mouth, airways, respiration, ears, sleep, behavior, growth and development, speech, attention and concentration, and in older ages also snoring and sleep apnea.

The effects of dysfunction of the tongue affect quite a few organs.

"It can be explained as a kind of stage that leads to a stage that leads to a stage," Dr. Butzer explained. Up, and with each swallowing or displacement the tongue expands and the palate expands.

For babies who do not breastfeed well, or for other reasons, their palate is narrow, it is actually the floor of the nose, and then the air passages are very very narrow, so it is difficult to breathe from the nose, and when it is difficult to breathe from the nose then open the mouth, and when the mouth is opened

. In it a thing leads to a thing - creates, according to Dr. Butzer, "a vicious circle that aggravates the reaction. "Enlarged, and children with an open mouth - and when the mouth is open the whole growth process is in the wrong direction, we get ones with enlargements of the polyps, adenoids."

  • How to live with one of the most embarrassing medical problems there is?

  • This medical examination must not be waived by any parent

  • The first aid button that accompanies anywhere and anytime - and saves lives

But despite these dramatic effects, Dr. Butzer explains that there is not enough awareness of this among ENT doctors.

And what about adults? Dr. Butzer explained that even if an adult suspects he has a related tongue, he should check it and treat plunder.

"In your 20s-30s, it is likely that a person does not snore as he would snore in the 50s-60s. And snoring has a devastating effect on our overall health," he said.

The testing process begins with questioning.

The doctor will ask the patient how his speech is, if there have been speech difficulties he has overcome in the past, and also how his sleep is.

"How was he as a teenager if he did not sleep well and snored, does he have ADHD that originates from bad sleep? Because there are disorders that mimic ADHD in children who do not sleep well. There can also be effects on the digestive system - it all has to do with everything."

What to do in case of a related tongue?

In adulthood, the diagnosis is important - to see if there is a connection between the dysfunction of the mouth and the symptoms that the person presents.

In case there is a malfunction of the mouth, start practicing the muscles of the mouth, with a communication clinician and an occupational therapist.

"Strengthen the muscles, a lot of homework, learn to have a closed mouth in the first stage, sometimes you also need an expansion of the palate by an orthodontist," said Dr. Butzer

. Larger ones, usually require a combination - early diagnosis and early intervention by practicing and learning proper function, and sometimes surgery to release the tongue.
