Ayia Napa in south-eastern Cyprus does not always coincide with a relaxing holiday on the neighboring island, but only 10 minutes away (and about 40 minutes from Larnaca) is a quiet area very suitable for families, unfamiliar to most readers.

Meet Protaras - a resort town with peaceful beaches, clean nature and luxurious hotels.

In fact, until 1974, before Turkey conquered northern Cyprus, many spent time in Turkish-controlled Famagusta, while Protaras was a small, sleepy and somewhat remote coastal town in western Cyprus.

During the war between Turkey and Cyprus, Turkey occupied the north of the island, which covers about 40% of the entire island, and the Cypriots decided to develop the southwest of the island as a replacement for the occupied Famagusta.

Today there are two major resort towns in the west of the island - Ayia Napa which is characterized by a young and slightly wild party atmosphere, and Portaras - which has become a resort town specializing in resorts for families with children.

3rd place in the "Best Beach in Europe" competition

Protaras is also known as a famous diving site, especially the Green Bay site, which is considered a site that people come to a lot to dive, start as advanced, and improve their diving skills.

By the way, the most popular beach in the town is "Fig Tree Bay", where sand is pleasant and clear water, and it even came in third place as the best beach in Europe by Tripadvisor in 2011.

New hotels were built in Portaras, many of which incorporated water parks and attractions for children.

These hotels offer family rooms that are also suitable for relatively large families (4-2 children).

The Golden Coast Hotel where we stayed, provides a great experience for families: sessions for parents and children throughout the day by the hotel's professional staff, and of course the required water attractions - a water slide and an adjacent beach.

At the entrance to the hotel, guests receive bracelets, and from there straight to the nearest buffet that serves three meals a day.

And if that's not enough, then you can also eat in between at the pool bar and drink great cocktails, the food is not gourmet but will do the job and for the kids.

If you get tired of sitting in a hotel, then the Israeli tourist's favorite attractions, such as the water park in Ayia Napa and the familiar beaches (Nissi Beach), are a 10-minute taxi ride and a 30-minute bus from the hotel to the beach.

Also at the hotel, a pampering massage, which is quite a must after a day when you turned on the kids and signed less yourself.

The spa at the hotel provides a wide range of treatments, and the prices are cheaper than most spa sites in hotels in the country (about NIS 250 per treatment).

Accelerated tourism development

In recent years, Portaras has undergone accelerated tourist development and has become a modern and luxurious resort town.

It has plenty of shops, picturesque houses in the country style of Cyprus and a pleasant walking route along the beach of Protaras, which extends over 15 km.

In Protaras there is also an excellent variety of traditional Cypriot restaurants (Greek style), and fresh fish dishes. In the evening, you Meet other tourists at the Flintstones Bar, hang out at one of the most popular karaoke clubs in Protaras, or watch live football at Fools & Horses.

How to get to Portaras?

Most Israeli tourists arrive in the town via Larnaca Airport, which is located in the south of the island and is connected to Israel on several daily flights.

From Larnaca, a drive of about an hour and a quarter will take you to Protaras.

how much does it cost?

A three-night holiday package in July, with half board, including transfers will cost the couple 1,298 euros. The
