A man has been arrested in West Virginia for allegedly beating his own sister to death.

The Jackson County Sheriff's Office said he was charged with attempted murder.

The 51-year-old woman was found covered in blood in her Cottageville home in June 2020.

The paramedics initially thought she was dead - but then realized that the woman was still breathing.

She suffered a serious head injury in the attack.

The wound suggested that it had been inflicted with a machete or an ax.

The murder weapon was never found, and there were neither video recordings nor eyewitnesses.

The victim was in a coma for two years.

The hospital recently contacted police and said the woman can now speak to authorities, Sheriff Ross Mellinger said, according to CNN.

She is still unable to speak complete sentences, but can answer with "yes" and "no".

Her testimony was enough for her brother to be arrested, said Mellinger.
