The sky above the fire - The pictures of the week

2022-07-23T15:23:53.412Z

In France and elsewhere, fires created apocalyptic scenes. In Frankfurt, on the other hand, one could admire a magnificent firebird on the street. Here you can see what other gripping motifs the week offered.

Darkened Sky

Clouds of dark gray smoke rise within sight of the seaside resort of Pyla sur Mer on France's Atlantic coast.

Many people are not deterred from visiting the beach by the effects of a forest fire near La Teste-de-Buch.

Like many other parts of the world, the Chinese capital has experienced unusually high temperatures this week.

In China, the air raid shelters were opened in some places so that people could cool down there.

Temperatures have surpassed all records across much of the country, while many areas are battling flooding.

Uncertainty near the front

War has been raging in Ukraine for months.

The Russian attacks are now mainly concentrated in the east of the country.

Behind bars

Brittney Griner is one of the most successful basketball players in history.

The American has been in custody in Russia since February for carrying vape cartridges with illegal hash oil in her luggage.

The case has escalated into a political issue, with US President Joe Biden declaring it a “priority”.

If convicted, WNBA star Griner faces up to ten years in prison.

While parts of Europe are groaning in the heat, people on the Chilean-Argentinian border have other problems.

The border crossing in the Andes was closed after a snowstorm, preventing these trucks from continuing their journey.

Seven years ago, a suicide attack took place in the Turkish city of Suruç.

At least 32 people died in the bomb attack at a cultural center.

The city is just a few kilometers from the Syrian border.

The attack is attributed to the »Islamic State«.

At a rally to mark the anniversary, the police cracked down on the demonstrators.

Then as now, many Kurds accuse the Turkish government of allowing IS to do its thing.

Sri Lanka is in a serious crisis.

Mass protests first forced President Gotabaya Rajapaksa into exile and then to resign.

Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe was named as President's successor this week.

The protests could continue, the people see Wickremesinghe as a confidant of the former president.

In the capital, Colombo, the anti-government slogans are still visible on the walls of houses.

The occasion: the funeral of Ivana Trump.

Donald Trump's ex-wife died in an accident last week.

The former US President, his wife Melania and the three children from Donald and Ivana Trump's marriage, Donald Junior, Eric and Ivanka, as well as their partners and children attended the funeral service.

Far from war

While the Russian military continues to murder and pillage in Ukraine and little is heard from the Kremlin other than war rhetoric, life in the provinces largely goes on as usual.

It belongs to the Tour de France like the colorful classification jerseys, the hairpin bends of Alpe d'Huez or the Champs-Élysées: For about 20 years, Didi Senft from Reichenwalde near Berlin has been the cycling devil who, likes to be armed with a trident, leads the class riders and Mountain fleas chasing up the mountains on the Tour of France.

The striking fan had actually declared his retirement in 2014, but this year Senfts Teufel again had a guest appearance on the big loop.

In many places, the temperatures can only be endured in air-conditioned or darkened rooms - or possibly by the water.

But: beware of the risk of sunburn.

These people have nevertheless opted for the beach option and visited Mare e Sole beach on the French Mediterranean island of Corsica amid the current heatwave.

Firebird

30 years of Christopher Street Day must of course be celebrated particularly loudly, wildly and, above all, colorfully.

Especially if the past two years had to be canceled due to Corona.

On Saturday, the CSD went through Frankfurt to draw attention to the rights of the queer community and their discrimination.

The harvest workers in Leinfelden-Echterdingen in Baden-Württemberg are not only on duty shortly after sunrise because of the heat.

The lettuce has to be harvested early in order to find its way to the supermarkets in time.

Power production mission

Beautiful is different - the solar panels here on a house in the Bavarian town of Kitzingen are not exactly decorative.

But they help to ensure that the transition to sustainable energy production is successful.

Do what you have to do.

Bleak prospects

It looks like a scene from a movie, but the situation is real: a couple is standing on the pier at Le Moulleau in Arcachon, France.

A plume of smoke looms behind them from forest fires.

France dispatched several seaplanes and hundreds of firefighters to fight the spreading fires, fueled by hot winds.

When the weather changes

The persistent heat is drying out the Zicksee in Austria.

In order to save the fish living in it, sport fishermen in the area were asked to catch the fish.

The animals were moved to surrounding ponds.

Around 30 tons should be fished out of the water, which is only around 20 centimeters deep.

How the rabbit runs

Do you know rabbit hop?

In this sport, dwarf rabbits compete against each other.

Animal sport is particularly popular in Northern Europe, and the world record in the high jump discipline was set in Sweden.

This competition also takes place there, more precisely on the Falsterbo peninsula.

Opera on the water

Who wants to go into a plush opera house when it's 30 degrees or more outside?

Even.

Brilliant idea to move the whole thing to a lake.

At the Bregenz Festival, the Uzbek soprano Barno Ismatullaeva sings in the production of the opera "Madame Butterfly" by Giacomo Puccini on the lake stage, under the open sky and surrounded by water.

For the actors, but also for the audience, it should be very pleasant these days.

Not everyone throws logs

In the public eye, the Scottish Highland Games are dominated by masculine muscle men.

But the event in the north of Great Britain has even more competition categories in store: Among other things, bagpipes or "highland dancing", where even the little ones can try their hand.

The Olderdissen zoo in Bielefeld comes up with a number of ideas to protect its residents from the heat.

The program also includes fruit frozen in water.

This makes the hot day easier at temperatures of up to 40 degrees Celsius.
