Penny's low price guarantee creates a lot of confusion among customers.

Because it doesn't seem to be as easy as the supermarket advertises the campaign.

Munich – Shopping in the supermarket can be particularly painful at the moment.

Prices are skyrocketing and there is no end in sight.

Discounters such as Lidl, Aldi, Penny and Co. compete for customers and try to attract them with cheap offers.

Just like Penny, who advertises with a “nowhere cheaper guarantee”.

At second glance, this appears more complicated than expected.

Many consumers are confused.

Penny: "Nowhere cheaper" - guarantee simply explained

Portals such as

Lebensmittel Zeitung

report that Penny's price guarantee is causing confusion.

The supermarket stated that customers can have the difference paid out if another retailer offers the purchased product cheaper.

However, Penny explains on her website that customers must draw their attention to the cheaper offer in advance.

Only then do customers pay the cheaper price of a stationary retailer.

There is also criticism that the supermarket uses its customers for market research.

The campaign gives Penny an insight into the pricing of the competition.

In the fine print, Penny has added even more hurdles to its low price guarantee.

Customers should pay attention to these five points:

The offer must be cheaper elsewhere in the respective campaign week

  • Customers must prove that products marked with the "Cheap Nowhere Guarantee" are cheaper at another retailer in the same promotional week.

It must be the identical product

  • The product that customers find cheaper in another supermarket must be identical to the product offered by Penny.

  • That means: same content, same container, same quantity etc.

The offer must be available to the general public

  • If customers can find a cheaper deal on the Penny product with a price guarantee, then it must be accessible to the majority of consumers.

For example in other supermarkets in Germany.

  • This excludes individual discounts such as coupons or offers from the Internet.

The cheaper offer must be shown prior to purchasing the "Cheap Nowhere" product

  • Customers must therefore prove before buying that the product is offered cheaper elsewhere.

  • Otherwise you pay the offer price from Penny and not the lower price of another provider.

  • No payment can be made later.

Penny gets to keep the settlement offer

  • The customers act as market researchers, because the Penny branch may keep information about cheaper offers for their price statistics.

Consumers should also be careful not to become victims of "shrinkflation".

This is what happens when the content of products decreases for the same price.
