(ANSA) - ROME, JUL 28 - The Russian authority that controls communications, Romkomnadzor, has asked for the registration as mass media of the prestigious Russian investigative newspaper Novaya Gazeta to be canceled: Tass claims this, citing the Basmanny court in Moscow.
"On July 26, the court received a request from Roskomnadzor against Novaya Gazeta to deregister as the mass media," the court said, according to Tass.
Novaya Gazeta was forced to suspend operations in Russia due to pressure from the authorities after the invasion of Ukraine by the Russian troops.
The Russian government has tightened censorship by cracking down on independent media and increasingly stifling freedom of the press.
Amarzo in Russia has also entered into force a "gag law" which provides for up to 15 years of imprisonment for the dissemination of information on the armed forces that should be considered "false" by the Russian authorities.
