According to a recent study, the Corona protest movement is politically predominantly right-wing.

Although people from different ideological milieus and also ideological currents can be found at the demonstrations, there is a focus on primarily right-wing, populist to extreme attitudes, said the Motra research association.

Motra stands for "Monitoring System and Transfer Platform Radicalization" and several German universities and the Federal Criminal Police Office are involved in the network.

"The Corona protest movement is politically, ideologically and ideologically more aligned to the right than to the left," says the report.

The corona pandemic is therefore a central driver of a “predominantly right-wing radicalization process that is underpinned by conspiracy theories and democratic distance”.

Hate postings against local politicians

According to the association, the report is based on a variety of research methods.

Among other things, the authors of the study evaluated statistics and conducted interviews with experts.

According to this, a survey of local politicians revealed that almost every second person was attacked, received hate mail or physically attacked in the six months prior to the survey.

"The consequences for the victims of threats and hostilities weigh heavily," said the President of the German Association of Cities and Mayor of the City of Münster, Markus Lewe (CDU).

The victims suffered psychological and physical consequences, some would consider leaving office.

"Our common good is endangered when people no longer want to get involved in the city or community," Lewe warned.

He called on affected local politicians to report attacks and threats to the police.
