The Ecuadorian Richard Carapaz (Ineos-Grenadiers) won the 12th stage of the Tour of Spain, winning for the first time in this race on the uphill finish at the Penas Blancas, at an altitude of 1,270.
Day in control for the leader of the standings, the Belgian Remco Evenepoel (Quick-Step), who reached the finish line several minutes late at the end of the 192 km of the route in Andalusia.
Evenepoel also crashed during the stage, but then managed to rejoin the group.
The climber of the Ineos, Olympic gold medal on the road in Tokyo, launched a decisive attack two kilometers from the finish line, breaking the leading group and crossing the line with an eight-second advantage over the Dutch Wilco Kelderman and 25 over the Spaniard Marc Soler.
Stage 13, which will take the group from Ronda to Montilla tomorrow, is 168km long and seems more suited to sprinters.
