People with lactose intolerance should avoid certain products, as they unexpectedly contain lactose and can cause symptoms.

1 / 10The pretzel is not only in demand at the Oktoberfest!

The traditional pretzels are popular with young and old. But beware: they may also contain lactose.

The pretzel is traditionally made from flour, yeast, water, salt and baking soda.

In some regions of Germany, however, fat (butter) is also added instead of lard or oil, which could trigger symptoms in people with lactose intolerance.

2 / 10Bread consists only of grain, so it doesn't contain lactose or milk sugar - really?

In fact, milk, whey or milk powder are often used in the production of bread and baked goods in retail.

People with a lactose intolerance could then react to this bread with symptoms.

3 / 10Hmm, yummy!

Such a good-smelling croissant dunked in the coffee simply tastes good.

But: This French pastry also contains lactose and can cause problems for people with an intolerance.

If you are not baking it yourself, you should always ask the baker of your choice whether it contains lactose or pay attention to the list of ingredients in packaged croissants.

4 / 10Which cake should it be?

When looking at the counter, the choice is not easy.

People with lactose intolerance should first ask the pastry chef which sweets are lactose-free so as not to experience a nasty surprise.

Processed foods such as sauces, casseroles, ready-made products and even cakes can contain milk and dairy products.

5 / 10What applies to cakes is unfortunately no different for cakes.

Milk sugar can also be contained here.

If you know that you react to lactose with bloating, abdominal cramps or diarrhea, play it safe and ask about the ingredients or simply use another, actually lactose-free delicacy such as fruit.

6 / 10Breakfast time is muesli time for many!

The same applies here: Either put together the types of grain yourself or take a close look at the ingredients when buying.

Because: Many muesli manufacturers add whole milk powder, skimmed milk powder or similar ingredients to their product.

For people with lactose intolerance, consumption can then end with unpleasant consequences such as diarrhea.

7 / 10While some love muesli in the morning, others like it hearty.

A delicious cold cut should not be missing.

However, sausage can also contain lactose.

Liverwurst, mortadella, Wiener sausages and some types of salami should be avoided by people with lactose intolerance.

8 / 10Very few suspect that there is also lactose in bread, sausage and preserves with cucumbers.

It is also worth taking a closer look at the packaging of pickles so that people with lactose intolerance do not regret the snack in between.

Stomach cramps, bloating, diarrhea – these symptoms are all too familiar to those who have a poor tolerance for certain milk and milk products.

Unfortunately, it is not just these foods that cause gastrointestinal problems.

Some products contain lactose without you suspecting it at first.

It is therefore important for people with lactose intolerance to know about them.

However, there are also dairy products such as specific cheeses and yoghurt that are allowed.

In case of lactose intolerance

the body cannot digest the lactose contained in milk.

The reason for this is a congenital or acquired enzyme deficiency of lactase - the digestive enzyme of lactose.

Lactase is needed so that milk sugar can be properly metabolized.

Foods with lactose do not always cause severe symptoms - the amount of lactose that needs to be digested is crucial.
