The ingenious metamorphosis of the Royal Museum of Antwerp

DECRYPTION - Under construction since 2011, the richest art collection in Flanders is back in its place. The rooms have returned to their 19th century luster and others have been created providing 40% more exhibition space.


After eleven years of closed doors due to works, the Royal Museum of Fine Arts in Antwerp (KMSKA) reopened on Saturday.

It is an event because this institution created by Napoleon and installed in its current walls since 1890 has the largest art collection in Flanders.

Not to mention the drawings, watercolors and prints, 454 paintings exhibited and 200 sculptures ranging from the beginning of the 14th century to today.

Out of a total of 6,400 preserved works (over 2,000 sheets) this seems little.

But the quality of what we finally see brought together again over these 37 rooms, plus thirteen intended for temporary exhibitions, is such that it is enough to satisfy the visitor.
