It is hidden in the Advent calendar, is in the form of St. Nicholas in its infancy and puts one or the other in a good mood in between - chocolate.

But neither inflation nor price increases stop at sweets.

Wiesbaden – Most people love chocolate.

Bitter, sweet, whole milk, with or without nuts.

Chocolate is not only popular around Christmas.

Over a million tons of chocolate products were produced for sale in Germany in 2021.

This was announced by the Federal Statistical Office on St. Nicholas Day.

An increase of over three percent compared to 2020. Christmas sales with chocolate Santa Clauses often start in October.

Then the customers find the candy on the shelves of the grocers.

Not sweet at all - chocolate in October 2022 was twelve percent more expensive than in the previous year

If you convert the amount to the population, 12.9 kilograms were produced per capita last year.

That would correspond to about two and a half bars of chocolate - per capita and per week.

But inflation is also affecting chocolate products.

In October 2022, consumers had to pay twelve percent more for a chocolate product than in October 2021, Destatis calculates.

But still: This price increase was well below that of food as a whole, which amounted to 20.3% in the same period.

The most important component of chocolate is cocoa.

It is mainly imported in the form of cocoa beans and broken cocoa beans.

The prices have not risen quite as much.

Import prices in October 2022 were almost eleven percent higher than in October of the previous year.

And there is currently no relief in sight for food prices in the coming year either.

A look at the forecast for the inflation rate in Germany shows that 2023 will also be expensive.

What smokers should be aware of is that tobacco tax in Germany will increase on January 1, 2023.

Not sweet at all - Ökotest only recommends a few chocolate Santa Clauses

Just in time for the Advent season, the inspectors from Ökotest took a closer look at chocolate Santa Clauses and Santa Clauses.

The result is shocking: all 23 chocolate men tested contain mineral oil.
