Are traditions important to you at Christmas?

In Sweden, an almond is hidden in the oatmeal on Christmas morning.

Every country has its own Christmas traditions.

When you think of Christmas in Sweden, you might think of the Christmas trees thrown out the window in the Ikea commercial.

But do you also know any culinary specialties for Christmas from the Scandinavian country?

Especially on Christmas morning there is a nice tradition from Swedish cuisine.

Swedish Christmas tradition: Little treasure hunt in the porridge on Christmas morning

Swedes like to eat oatmeal for breakfast.

Because the grain can be quickly and easily prepared into an oat porridge, called Gröt in Sweden, and provides enough energy for the day.

Even the Vikings are said to have started the day with grain groats, such as those made from rye or barley, but also oats.

At Christmas, the Swedish specialty is combined with a small but nice treasure hunt.

In Great Britain, on the other hand, plum pudding is one of the culinary Christmas traditions, whereas in this country people prefer to snack on homemade cookies such as Hilda bread rolls or Bethmännchen.

In Austria, on the other hand, one can hardly imagine Christmas without Linzer Kipferl with raspberry filling and chocolate icing.

You need the following ingredients for the classic Christmas tradition from Sweden: Gröt

For 4 people:

  • 400 ml oatmeal

  • 500ml of water

  • 500ml milk

  • 1 tsp salt

If you're more of a sweet type, you can also mix applesauce into the Swedish oatmeal.

Traditionally, Swedes also like to eat their Gröt with cranberries.

The Swedish Christmas tradition is quick, easy and fun to prepare

  • Put the oatmeal, water and milk in a saucepan.

  • Briefly boil the oatmeal while stirring constantly.

  • Also add the salt and let the porridge simmer for about five minutes.

  • Divide the porridge between the four bowls and hide an almond in a porridge.

  • Anyone who discovers the almond in their breakfast on Christmas morning will receive a small gift.

  • In Sweden, a plate of groats with a wooden spoon is also put out on Christmas Eve for Tomte the pixy.
