A 23-year-old pedestrian was hit and fatally injured on the evening of Christmas Day in Malchin, Mecklenburg.
The driver of the vehicle fled without taking care of the woman, police said.
Passers-by only found the body around 8:30 a.m. in the morning from passers-by on the side of the road.
The woman was therefore between 10:30 p.m. and 11:15 p.m. on foot on the main road that runs through the village.
There was no immediate indication of the vehicle involved in the accident.
The car and the driver were still being searched for on Monday afternoon.
A police spokesman said some leads were being followed up.
Police suspect damage to the front of the vehicle.
Criminal police and experts are trying to use the traces at the crime scene to determine the type of vehicle.
Any witnesses were asked to contact the police.
