For days they stayed in a self-dug tunnel, now these two opponents of coal have ended their action in Lützerath.

The police had previously entrusted RWE with ending the tunnel operation.

The fact that the activists have now left the underground facility voluntarily is the result of intensive discussions, the energy company said.

A life-threatening situation was ended by an amicable solution.

On Sunday, the police took all activists out of trees, houses, huts and wooden structures and declared the eviction to be over.

Lützerath had been fenced off for days and sealed off by the police.

Climate activists had occupied the abandoned village to prevent mining of the lignite underneath.

Last Wednesday, the police began the evacuation with massive forces.

On Saturday, thousands of people gathered near Lützerath for a large demonstration.

Around 1,000 people, most of whom were masked, tried to get to the closed-off area of Lützerath.

Video footage shows police officers using batons and pepper spray against individual demonstrators.

The »Lützerath Lives« initiative then spoke of an »incredible degree of police violence«.

The police see it differently.

Andreas Müller, Aachen police:

"Anyone who breaks through police lines, on the one hand in the direction of the opencast mine, on the other hand also in the direction of the town of Lützerath, whoever breaks through police lines and does not stop after being asked to do so several times and continues to walk towards the police force, one must first assume that he really knowingly and willfully seeks confrontation with the police.

That doesn't justify every deployment we saw yesterday.

But that is at least a clear distancing from the blanket accusation of disproportionate or excessive police violence.«

With the end of the tunnel action, Lützerath is completely cleared.

RWE has already started demolishing the houses.

In March or April, the energy company wants to dig up the former settlement.
