80 years ago, Hans and Sophie Scholl, figures of the German resistance, killed by the Nazi regime

These are the last words of Hans Scholl before his execution at the guillotine on February 22, 1943. This German student, aged 24, was sentenced to death for high treason by the Nazi regime.

His sister, Sophie, was executed the same day.

These two resistance figures are at the origin of the White Rose, a group known for its massive distribution of anti-Nazi leaflets in Munich.

In 2021, on the occasion of Sophie's 100th birthday, Germany once again paid tribute to them.

A stamp bearing the effigy of the young girl was reissued, with these words scribbled a few hours before her execution:

“A blessed and sunny day and yet I must leave.

What does my death matter if by our actions, thousands of people could be awakened”.

Hans and Sophie, two students with remarkable courage, were both born in Ingersheim, a town in southern Germany - Hans in 1918 and Sophie in 1921 - at a time when Hitler was helping to build the National Socialist Party...
