14 years after they broke up, the band returns to the stage for four evenings at Hangar 11 • The stories and jokes worked, the biggest hits survived the test of time and the thousands who came were swept into a party that no one wanted to end • Review

The band "The Porcupines" always has some kind of story in store.

Usually it is about some unusual experience from the past or an invented and funny case.

They became famous for knowing how to incorporate this humor into the songs.

One story stood out more than the rest at their reunion show last night (Tuesday) at Hangar 11 in Tel Aviv.

This time it was a short anecdote about performing in uniform during the days of military service.

They were three friends (Iti Gluska, Ido Zigo Ofek and Guy Mazig) with musical instruments and only one song, which they performed in a closed base in front of a group of soldiers.

In retrospect, this was the band's first performance, and the event ended with the punishment of hanging.

The story ended and they started playing that song.

"I don't want to hear it, they told him. I didn't come to see your show. I don't want to know who you are at all," the thousands of people in the crowd suddenly sang in chorus.

Gluska the vocalist fell silent, everyone knew every word and many eyes in the hall were filled with tears.

The circle is closed.

Three decades after they met, 14 years after they broke up - if there's one thing you can't take away from the spurs, it's the ability to perform and the talent.

The Porcupines are a supergroup, five celebrated musicians who grew up on the influences of Hive and managed to combine disco, rock, pop, funk, dance and world music, dressed up catchy tunes on illusory texts (for example, a love song to an alpaca), added puns and played complicated musical roles.

Three albums were enough to release, and they never received the respect they deserved.

The success of the debut album in the early 2000s raised expectations, but the second album flooded internal disagreements and led to Gluska's departure.

The end of the band was to break up quietly, a few days after the release of the third album.

No one cried, there weren't many fans, and the band members split off into successful individual careers.

Take, for example, Guy Mezig, who collaborates in porcupines with his younger brother Eyal.

Mezig is considered one of the leading guitarists in Israel, perhaps the most valued and sought after in the entire industry.

Two songs he played and sang yesterday (one of them from his solo career, "Doing magic and rock and roll") made the audience dizzy more than all the band's songs and created strong and emotional reactions among many.

By the way, the same loyal audience that Zigg gathered around him in the last decade was the one that finally pressured the musician to initiate the reunion of the legendary band, since most of them had never seen them play together live.

This band, which nobody was interested in a decade and a half ago, suddenly sold out four full shows (three consecutive evenings at the Hangar and one more at Caesarea) and it is expected that the fifth show in May at the Caesarea Amphitheater will also become a sell-out.

There is no set age for the audience of the porcupines.

There were tired people between the ages of 40 and 60 walking around, alongside energetic 20-somethings who stormed the merch stands, bought shirts and knew all the words and movements even though in the previous incarnation they were too small to be allowed into a rock concert.

Amazing performance and great talent.

21 songs were included in the reunion show, with representation from all three albums.

They opened with "The disco is here again" and immediately lifted the place up in the air.

From there they continued in a rhythmic rock and roll sequence ("Blue Light", "Does not hurt", "You"), moved to a cluster of ballads ("On this Purim", "If you only talk" and as mentioned "I don't want to hear"), and closed the night with a party Stormy dances ("Check your engine", "We went out to dance") and an encore of "Achla Bachela".

In between they had a fruitful conversation with the viewers.

It's easy to get carried away by the spurs.

is a band that just wants to have fun and mood.

The jokes worked, the video art and lighting added value and they all played great and sounded great.

Maybe not all the songs survive the test of time, and here and there there was rust, but just like in the days of glory and innocence of the beginning of the millennium - the porcupines swept everyone interested into a party that no one wants to end.

At the end, when the five porcupines hugged again on stage and bowed before the silhouettes of five thousand people - it was clear that disco had come to town.

So move your ass, move Thagen, happy again in the confessional, beat a mess, dance like John Travolta, and again the disco will not go from here.

The disco is here again.

Good that you came.
