When Serge Dorny was appointed director of the Munich Opera with musical director Vladimir Jurowski, a Russian who grew up in Germany, one of their first ideas was to stage
Prokofiev's
War and Peace there.
With the director Dmitri Tcherniakov, who is never as comfortable as revisiting his Russian culture.
On February 24, 2022, they were on the verge of abandoning the idea of playing this work to which the composer had added a strong nationalist coloring to the glory of Stalin.
They finally decided to confront it, by proposing their version of it.
And it's a shock, although not necessarily the one we expected.
Cherniakov, who lives in Berlin but has his family in Russia, could have brought the war in Ukraine to the stage.
It would have been easy, and Tcherniakov never took the easy way out.
