The Duke of Sussex opened up about his use of hallucinogenic substances during a video interview broadcast this Saturday, March 4. And how they had helped him overcome certain traumas.

A prince without any taboos.

Harry spoke openly about his use of psychedelic drugs on Saturday March 4 in an online conversation with trauma doctor Gabor Maté.

The 38-year-old Duke of Sussex has revealed that certain substances, such as marijuana or ayahuasca, have been essential in coping with his past traumas, likening their effects to 'cleaning a windscreen' helping to "remove the filters of life".

"It brought me a feeling of relaxation, relief, comfort, a lightness that I managed to retain for a period of time," he confided to this Canadian doctor, adding: "I started doing it recreationally and then I started to realize how good it was for me.

I would say it was one of the fundamental things in my life that changed me and helped me deal with the traumas and pains of the past.

They unlock a lot of what we removed.”

This isn't the first time Meghan Markle's husband has admitted to using drugs.

He had revealed taking other substances - such as cocaine and marijuana - as a teenager in his highly controversial memoir,

The Suppleant

, published in January.

With Gabor Maté, Harry also spoke of feeling “slightly different from the rest of [his] family” throughout his life and upbringing: “I know my mum felt the same way.

And so that makes sense to me.”

About his relationship difficulties with the royal family, he explained: “Many families are complicated, many families are dysfunctional”, then detailed his feeling of being sometimes misunderstood and not sufficiently supported by those around him.

“When I was regularly going to therapy, I suddenly realized that I had learned a new language and that the people around me didn't speak it – I actually felt more left out”.
