The

Guarantor for the Protection of Personal Data

has ordered, with immediate effect, the temporary limitation of the processing of data of Italian users against

OpenAI

, the US company that developed and manages the platform.

At the same time, the Authority opened an investigation.

The decision went around the world.

Among others, Reuters, The NYTimes, The BBC, The Guardian and The Financial Times have talked about it, since it is a choice made only by Italy, which at the present state of things is the only nation on the planet to have adopted such measure.

According to a survey carried out by

SWG

before the provision of the Guarantor, between 1 and 4 March last, for the Italians who tried ChatGPT the experience was one of curiosity and interest, with 70% of the interviewees declaring they had had positive emotions, even almost one in two experienced negative reactions.

Of these, 6% had suspicion and concern in using the artificial intelligence platform.

ChatGPT experience

On the matter, ANSA and DataMediaHub have carried out the analysis of online conversations (social media + online news + blogs and forums) in recent days to deepen the relationship of Italians with ChatGPT and the reactions to the decision of the Guarantor.

In a few days, almost 22,000 online citations, in Italian, for ChatGPT, by almost 5,000 single authors, whose contents involved (with likes + reactions + comments and shares) more than 100,000 subjects.

The maximum peak of these conversations was recorded on 1st April last, precisely after the decision of 31st March by the Guarantor.

Volume of conversations generated a potential reach, the so-called "opportunity to be seen" (i.e. the opportunity they theoretically had on the basis of these volumes of conversations to be exposed to content relating to the flood), 12.2 billion views on the topic.

We reasonably estimate that the effective reach stands at 661.2 million impressions, of effective views of content related to the topic in question, thanks to the large media coverage recorded in this regard.

Online conversations with a clearly negative connotation as regards the sentiment, the share of emotions and, precisely, feelings contained in the online verbalizations on the matter.

The greatest participation in online discussions was recorded by those aged between 25 and 34, and by those who, not surprisingly, have a prevalent interest in topics related to science in all its facets.

In addition to the main social platforms, there were many discussions in the forums where a heated discussion on the issue took place.

AI is already well present in our lives.

Better to really understand its advantages and disadvantages, and impose clear rules on the use of this technology before being overwhelmed instead.

But it seems that Italians, or at least those who have expressed themselves online about it, are more concerned about the impact that this could have on work and man-machine power relations, and much less about the possible impact for data collection. and therefore on privacy.
