Dengue added
more than 12,000 new cases in the last week
.
The National Epidemiological Bulletin for week 13 indicates this Friday that 28,235 cases
were registered in Argentina
, of which 25,419 have no travel history.
Seven days ago there were 16,143 registered cases.
"The accumulated cases registered so far this season are above those of the two previous years and -comparing with the two previous epidemics- they are
26% above those registered for the same period in 2020
and 4% below the number of cases for the same period in 2016,” the report says.
Until now, 2020
was the record year for registered cases
, with just over 58,000 cases.
At this time of the year, a lower figure had been registered at that time, so it is estimated that if the curve continues to grow at this speed, the final number of total cases would exceed that mark.
The provinces with
the most cases registered
so far are Santa Fe (7,429), Tucumán (5,132), Salta (3,820), City of Buenos Aires (3,408), Buenos Aires (2,679) and Santiago del Estero (1,709).
In cumulative incidence per 100 thousand inhabitants, the most affected provinces are Tucumán, Salta and Jujuy.
The
circulating serotypes
to date are DEN-2 (10 jurisdictions corresponding to the NOA and Central regions) and DEN-1 (in 7 jurisdictions corresponding to the NEA and Central regions).
Circulation of both serotypes is registered in four jurisdictions: Buenos Aires, CABA, Santa Fe and Santiago del Estero.
In addition, co-circulation of dengue and chikungunya is registered in Buenos Aires (San Martin, Quilmes and Almirante Brown), CABA, Córdoba (Capital), Corrientes (Paso de la Patria), Formosa (Las Lomitas), Santa Fe (Rosario and Santa Faith), indicates the official report.
Regarding the deceased cases, until April 1, 2023, 14 cases with positive tests for dengue were registered.
Six were legally female and 8 male and a median age of 52 years, with a minimum of 13 and a maximum of 87 years.
In the midst of the outbreak, the Ministry of Health states on its website that "
there is no vaccine
or specific treatment for dengue.
Therefore, treatment is essentially symptomatic.
Infected people are recommended to drink plenty of water to replenish fluids and carry out daily medical control and monitoring.
The reality is that
there is a vaccine
against dengue, from two different laboratories.
One has already been approved by ANMAT, from the Sanofi laboratory, but it is not available in the country.
If it were available, it could only be used by people who had had dengue at least once.
That is, to try to avoid a second infection.
The other is from the Takeda laboratory and
has been waiting to be approved by ANMAT since October 2021
, when it entered the regulatory bodies of Europe, the United States and other countries in the region at the same time.
Europe approved it at the end of last year and Brazil gave it the go-ahead a month ago.
The WHO, on its website, also says that there is no specific treatment for dengue but adds: "
The Dengvaxia (Sanofi's) vaccine is also available
for people who have had dengue at least once and live in places where the disease is common.
It has not yet updated the information with Takeda's.
