The unusual message of the Archbishop of Salta on the Via Crucis: references to Jey Mammón, artificial intelligence and 'financial scam'

Mario Antonio Cargnello, denounced for gender violence and creator of a curious Ministry of the Exorcist, returned to the controversy.

Denounced for gender violence by the Discalced Carmelites last year and creator of a controversial Ministry of the Exorcist, the Archbishop of

Salta

Mario Antonio Cargnello

again caused a stir this Friday with his speech on the Via Crucis in which he made references to

Jey Mammón

, He also talked about

artificial intelligence

and even "

financial scams

" in front of young people from Salta.

"There are false gods. When I think it's the twine, sooner or later I realize that it has no face. Fame lasts a day. We are seeing how myths fall in the world of television, one after the other...", said Cargnello, referring to the complaint of sexual abuse against the driver Jay Mammón.

But it was not the only phrase that drew attention in the Via Crucis that took place this Friday on the San Bernardo hill in the capital of Salta.

In his homily, the controversial Cargnello stated: "Christians believe that God has a human face, that it is the face of Jesus."

The controversial Archbishop of Salta, Mario Cargnello, spoke of artificial intelligence in his homily.

"If we ask why we have come today, the answers vary. It may be out of habit, to ask for myself, for my son... Basically we all came because the Lord called us. If I want to build a house, today I ask a architect to help me. If I'm sick, I decide to consult a doctor who tells me what to take. I need to trust someone to help me live," said the archbishop according to El

Tribuno

Cargnello not only spoke of Christ, but also referred to artificial intelligence: "It is fashionable to talk about artificial intelligence. Who are we if a machine is going to start dominating us? Power at some point goes away and passes to other hands. It goes from one place to another. Now, with the financial scam, companies put money in places that turn over from one day to the next."

"The Christian thing is to believe that God has become man and lost his dignity and life for each one of us. We contemplate that on Good Friday and it is the basis of our faith," he concluded.

Cargnello, denounced for gender violence and creator of a Ministry of the Exorcist

A year ago a strong complaint was made against the Archbishop of Salta for an event in the middle of the pandemic that uncovered more episodes of gender violence.

In 2020, Cargnello approached the coffin with the remains of the nun, a victim of Covid.

The archbishop noticed that on top of the drawer there was an image of the so-called Virgen del Cerro, a devotion that emerged three decades ago in Salta, which quickly attracted many devotees in Argentina and beyond the borders, but that Cargnello never recognized.

Immediately, he tried to replace it with a crucifix.

Seeing that everything was being filmed by a nun of hers, he pounced on her to take the recording from her, generating a struggle.

For the nuns of the San Bernardo convent, of the Discalced Carmelites -an emblematic colonial building in the capital of Salta-, the episode was the straw that broke the camel's back after a series of violent, physical and psychological situations, to the detriment of the nuns.

Strictly speaking, the complaint filed with the Office of Family and Gender Violence in Salta also covers another bishop, Martín Elizalde, who served as head of the Diocese of 9 de Julio in Buenos Aires and is retired.

It is because he was sent as a veedor of the Holy See after a complaint to the Vatican filed by the nuns.

In turn, in November last year he also drew attention for the signing of an official statement in which he announced the creation of the "

Ministry of the Exorcist

" and appointed two priests to "expel the domain of people" possessed.

Héctor Fernando Campero and Loyola Pinto y de Sancristóval are the ones who were left in charge of this "very delicate" and "infrequent" service, as detailed in the document released last Wednesday.

Mario Cargnello signed the creation of the Ministry of the Exorcist and appointed two priests to perform this rite

“The Devil continues bent on alienating souls from God by inviting them, through temptation, to sin.

That is why we can affirm that this is the worst of evils, and the cause of many others.

This is usually called 'ordinary action of the devil'”, the text begins.

The appointment of an official exorcist is an unusual practice, but it is far from unprecedented.

Without going any further, the Code of Canon Law of 1917 ordered that each bishop designate an exorcist.

However, failure to comply with that mandate led to its removal in 1983, when the code was updated.
