A
phenomenon has
the residents of
Guaymallén
in suspense , in Greater Mendoza.
In some open areas,
smoke rises from the ground
due to apparent
underground fires
, and residents who want to build their homes are threatened by fire.
For eight months they have been denounced by the residents of the Silvano Rodríguez Subdivision in the town of Kilometer 8, a rural area where
there are vegetable crops
.
Families who have bought land to build their houses discovered that
smoke and a lot of heat come out of the ground
.
The situation worsened a little over a month ago, when
a boy, only two years old, fell into a crack in this subdivision and suffered burns
on his feet and fingers, according to the neighbors.
The smoke is permanent
and the neighbors are worried because
the earth has begun to give way
.
"Fire is igniting everywhere. We need a solution to be found because it is harming our health," said Rosa Flores, grandmother of the burned child.
Underground fires: what the specialists explain
Guillermo Ferraris, professor of the Department of Forest Fires of the Park Rangers in Mendoza, explained that the fires occur in an area
where there were lagoons before, with reeds
, which
when they dried up
became agricultural areas.
"The main soil is
peat, which is an organic fuel
, and very common in forest areas. When a fire occurs, for example a tree, when the soil descends through the roots, it combusts with this organic material" , detailed the fire management specialist.
What for the residents of Guaymallén is
a paranormal phenomenon, Ferraris describes as something common
in forest areas: "They are underground fires that burn
slowly
and when they come into contact with oxygen that smoke is produced that can be seen in the distance."
In a cavity like this there can be
between 600 and a thousand degrees of temperature
.
It can last
several months
before going extinct.
To put out the fire, the Municipality and some owners make trenches with backhoes, but according to Ferraris, this only works if the mineral soil is reached to cut the fire, and the roots that can be the source of fires are removed.
"
If we pour water on top, there is no effect
, because it evaporates quickly due to the high temperature," explained the brigade member.
Another expert, Daniel Burrieza, director of Civil Defense of Mendoza, explained: "
The cracks
are produced by
the gasification of combustion itself
. And what makes them very difficult to manage is that the fires do not have an epicenter or a defined focus They can go out in one place, but mutate in another direction."
The phenomenon is also common in
San Juan
.
It happened in the Médanos de Oro area, with 20 hectares of peat that burned,
the foundations of a school
collapsed , and four people were injured.
