The American competition authority bangs its fist on the table against Meta.
In a Statement of Objections released Wednesday, the Federal Trade Commission (FTC), chaired by Silicon Valley pet peeve Lina Khan, says it is considering banning the social media giant from monetizing data captured from users of under 18 from Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, but also from the Meta Quest virtual reality headset.
In other words, Meta could be forced to stop serving personalized ads to young Americans.
The FTC adds that the data collected during the adolescence of an Internet user cannot be exploited when the latter turns 18.
If the American authority threatens to crack down on Meta, it is because the Californian group would not have respected certain commitments made to the FTC in 2020 to settle the Cambridge Analytica scandal.
