You can also pay attention to sustainability when barbecuing. These tips and tricks make the BBQ evening tasty and environmentally friendly.
The spicy smell of grilled meat on a beautiful summer evening is irresistible to many – whether it's barbecuing on the balcony or in the garden. Unfortunately, animal welfare and sustainability often take a back seat. These tips will minimize the ecological footprint at the barbecue.
High-quality charcoal
Since charcoal from South America or Africa is very often produced illegally, a renunciation of this cheap variant is an absolute must. Instead, the purchase of domestic coal, for example from beech wood, is recommended. When buying, it is very important to take a look at the seal of approval. The Naturland, FSC or PEFC labels guarantee the sustainability of coal production. However, the most environmentally friendly are olive stones, coconut shells or corn cobs. These are mostly available online.

Do not use chemical igniters
For environmental protection, the renunciation of chemical grill lighters is inevitable. Lighters, which are soaked in gasoline, for example, not only smell bad, but also emit unhealthy pollutants. Wax or wood grill lighters offer the same effect and are also more environmentally friendly. But here, too, an FSC certificate should be available.
Reusable solutions
Disposable barbecues are poison for the environment. In this case, it is better to rely on a reusable grill and, if necessary, share the costs with friends. The absence of disposable tableware is also environmentally friendly.
Side dishes and meat are often packaged in aluminum so that they can be placed directly on the grill. Unnecessary garbage is created here and this type of barbecuing is not exactly conducive to health either. Instead, place the meat or vegetables on the grill without packaging. The grill grate can also be easily cleaned with an environmentally friendly home remedy after the BBQ. Alternatively, a cast-iron skillet will also produce an excellent grilling result.

If meat, then high-quality
Vegan meat substitutes, tofu, grilled cheese, feta or vegetables now offer an excellent grilling experience even without meat. But if you don't want to do without the steak, you should pay attention to the organic seal when buying and leave ready-marinated and shrink-wrapped products in the refrigerated section. By the way, when barbecuing in the garden, not everything is allowed and can cause trouble with the neighbors. (eee/jok/spot)
