Bonomi, 'the wedge is good but a test is the budget law'

Highlights: "It is a beginning of the journey, but for it to have an effect it must be an important intervention around 16 billion," says Confindustria president Carlo Bonomi. "After the pandemic we rebound +7% in 2021, +4% in 2022 and also this year I am convinced we will break through 1%. Under a series of conditions: the first is that the price of energy remains stable and falls, the second that important measures are taken to stimulate investments," he says. "It is not up to us to judge governments, governments are judged by voters at the ballot box," he adds.

"It is a beginning of the journey, but for it to have an effect it must be an important intervention around 16 billion, but during the year it is difficult to think of a structural intervention. We take as a good omen to have dedicated those few resources. The real challenge will be the budget law on which we will measure the real will of the government to intervene on the tax wedge". This was stated by the president of Confindustria, Carlo Bonomi, at the conference for the 50th anniversary of the association of Piedmont. "I think that Confindustria has made a proposal of great national responsibility. We are willing to give up tax expenditure, we are talking about almost 14 billion, as long as the government puts them all on the structural cut of the tax wedge. We are willing to take on this challenge, now the government is it," Bonomi added.

'GDP over 1% but measures are needed for investments' "After the pandemic we rebound +7% in 2021, +4% in 2022 and also this year I am convinced we will break through 1%. Under a series of conditions: the first is that the price of energy remains stable and falls, the second that some important measures are taken to stimulate investments, explained the president of Confindustria. "It is undeniable that we have a great climate of uncertainty, so it is obvious that entrepreneurs slow down investments, but we cannot afford it, especially at a time when we have to cross transitions that are inescapable. I ask the Government to have the courage to make interventions to stimulate investment, because they are fundamental. If we do this, we will reign," Bonomi said.

'We are a strategic asset, the government listens to us' "It is not up to us to judge governments, governments are judged by voters at the ballot box. We discuss the issues of industry and that serve the country. According to the words we have heard on several occasions and that I summarize in the famous phrases 'we do not want to disturb those who produce' and 'work is not created by decree'. I always say to all governments, if this is the attitude you have and want to help the industrial system, listen to it, because who better than an entrepreneur can say what the company needs. Because if the attitude is 'I make a measure and then it's your problem if it doesn't work' it's not good," Bonomi said. "I ask the government to listen to what Italian industry needs, an industry that has proven to be strong, better than our competitors in Europe and a strategic asset of the country. Three years ago the industry held on a country that would otherwise have been finished. Not for a corporate matter, but because it was our responsibility and our task, we do not want labels and medals, but that the country remember that we are a strategic asset. And so it is a national interest to defend our industry," Bonomi added.
