(ANSA) - ROME, MAY 13 - "I reconfirm Italy's full support to Ukraine in terms of military, financial, humanitarian and reconstruction aid, in the short and long term. At stake are not only the independence and territorial integrity of Ukraine, but also the freedom of peoples and international order." This is what the President of the Republic, SergioMattarella, reportedly said to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky during the meeting at the Quirinale.
"Peace, for which we are all working, must restore justice and international law. It must be a true peace and not a surrender," Mattarella said.
Other topics of conversation included the effectiveness of economic sanctions on Russia, the issue of the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant, the fight against fake news with the need for more effective action at European level, the bombing of civilian structures and the abduction of Ukrainian children (described by Mattarella as "a harrowing and ignoble practice"), the reconstruction of the situation, the war crimes, Ukraine's entry into the European Union.
On this last topic, Mattarella said that "the decision of the European Union to start the process of integration of Ukraine was historic. Italy now aims to help Ukraine achieve the parameters". (ANSA).
