Highlights: From Sunday at 22 p.m. sharp, the EDC will go on strike. The railway is suspending long-distance traffic, but local traffic is also affected. According to the ADAC, traffic jams are expected on all motorways – even if the railway is still trying to take legal action against the planned strike at the last minute. Since the end of February, EVG has been negotiating new collective agreements with 50 railway companies for 230,000 employees.

Kassel/Berlin – Millions of people in Germany have to reschedule because of the announced warning strike in rail transport. "Of course, we are also assuming massive effects on regional transport," said a railway spokeswoman in Frankfurt on Friday (12 May). It is to be expected that there could be an impact on subnetworks on Sunday as early as 18:00. The railway and transport union (EVG) had called on the workers on Thursday (11 May) for the third warning strike in the current collective bargaining round. The railway decided to completely stop long-distance traffic from Sunday evening to Tuesday night. DB Regio will also hardly run a train. Bus and S-Bahn are also affected. Freight traffic is also likely to come to a standstill.

50-hour strike at the railway: EVG wants to hit rail in freight transport – economic consequences noticeable

This is exactly where the EVG wants to hit the railways, as the deputy chairman of the EVG, Kristian Loroch, confirmed, so that the economic consequences are more noticeable. "From its own conviction, Deutsche Bahn does not seem to want to present a negotiable offer, obviously considerable pressure is needed to do so. That's why we're now setting a new accent," says Loroch.

EDC is negotiating with the following companies:

  • Northern Region
  • Weser-Ems Busverkehr GmbH (WEB)
  • Haller Busbetrieb GmbH (HBB)
  • Regionalbus Braunschweig GmbH (RBB)
  • Region West

Since the end of February, EVG has been negotiating new collective agreements with 50 railway companies for 230,000 employees, 180,000 of whom work for Deutsche Bahn. Negotiations with most employers are stalling. With the third warning strike in the current year, the union wants to significantly increase the pressure. In concrete terms, the EDC is counting on effects for the economy, so that pressure is exerted on the negotiators of the railway companies.

In the meantime, Deutsche Bahn has agreed to do so, but only wants to clarify later in the negotiations whether all collective bargaining results will then also be included in the tables as increases for these employees or whether they will be paid through allowances.
