Robert De Niro first commented on the death of his 19-year-old grandson earlier this week, who previously appeared in the movie A Star Is Born. Leandro De Niro Rodriguez was found dead two days ago in a New York apartment. Although the official cause of death of the young man has not been made public, it is believed that the tragic incident was due to drug use, as white powder was found near the body of the deceased.

"I am deeply saddened by the passing of my beloved grandson Leo," the 79-year-old Hollywood star said in a brief statement. "We deeply appreciate everyone's words of condolences and ask that you respect our privacy as we mourn Leo," concluded the stunned grandfather, who became a father for the seventh time just a month ago.
Leandro was the son of Derna De Niro and the grandson of Diane Abbott, whom Robert De Niro married in 1976. Although the two divorced in 1988, the esteemed actor continued to be an integral part of their lives.

Leandro himself was also an actor, who aspired to follow in the footsteps of his grandfather. Among other things, he appeared in a small role in the 2018 remake of A Star Is Born, with Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper, as mentioned.

In a separate message shared by Derna De Niro on Instagram, the devastated mother wrote: "My beautiful, sweet angel. Words will not describe my love for you from the moment I felt you in my stomach. I don't know how to live without you, but I will try to continue spreading the love and light you made me feel just by being your mother. I'm so sorry, my baby. Rest in eternal paradise."
