Britney Spears had a miscarriage during her relationship with Justin Timberlake. If it had been just for me, I wouldn't have done it," the pop star writes in her memoir The Woman in Me, which hits bookstores on October 24. "But Justin wasn't happy about the pregnancy at all. He said he wasn't ready for there to be a baby in our lives and that we were too young," the singer says.
The first previews came out today in People magazine: Britney attacks her father Jamie and the rest of the family for the iron control they have exercised over her for 13 years: "Thinking about it makes me nauseous. I had become a robot, but a kind of robot child. Legal custody had deprived me of my being a woman. He had deprived me of my freedom. More than a person on stage, I had become an entity. I've always felt music in my bones and in my blood: they stole it from me."
Of the pregnancy, Spears said that "it was a surprise, but not a tragedy for me. I loved Justin very much and I was convinced that we would have a family together." In retrospect, the pop star says that abortion may not have been the right decision: "But Justin was so sure he didn't want to be a father." Spears was 17 years old when in 1999 she began her relationship with Timberlake who was a year older: Justin and Britney were together until 2002 and neither one nor the other have ever revealed why they broke up. Britney married Kevin Federline in 2004 with whom she had two sons, Sean and Jayden aged 17 and 16, from whom she divorced in 2006.
Going back to talking about the years of custodianship, a legal institution usually reserved for people who are not able to understand and want or very old, the pop star said that there was no way for her to behave like an adult, because the family did not treat her as an adult: "So I regressed to childhood, but then the adult part of me took over, except that my world wouldn't let me."
In June 2021, Spears, testifying via audio in court in impassioned tones, convinced the judge to revoke her within a few months. In a new interview with People ahead of the memoir's release, the pop star explains that from the beginning of her career she had let others speak for her: "Now I'm finally free to talk about myself and tell my story without consequences. And it's time to raise our voices." Britney said she's doing it for the fans as well: "They deserve to hear my side of the story. No more conspiracies and no more lies. It's me, finally in control of my past, my present, and my future."
