Most people are familiar with the small bags that are usually included with cut flowers.
But only a few know what they are all about.
It's not just Valentine's Day that many cut flowers are given away as gifts.
You can now get fresh flowers in every supermarket or discount store.
If you unpack them at home, you will often find a packet with fine granules in the bouquet.
This so-called fresh cut flower is intended to help flowers look attractive for longer.
But do you really need it or can you safely throw it away?
Sugar, acid and preservatives
There are home remedies and plant strengtheners to ensure that cut flowers stay fresh longer.

Having attractive flowers for as long as possible – this is the wish of most plant lovers.
Plant strengthener, which is said to extend the lifespan of flowers by up to 60 percent, is included in the price of most cut flowers.
And so the small bags end up in most people's flower vases along with fresh tap water.
But what exactly is included in the packages?

The sachets usually contain a mixture of sugar, citric acid and preservatives.
According to
Chrysal.com,
the tonics reduce the acidity of the water to about 4 pH, about the same level as soft drinks.
Cut flowers generally like an acidic environment, so they grow better and last longer.
In addition, the natural colors and fading of the flowers should be prevented.
Leaves and stems should remain firm and green.
The bags also dissolve quickly and do not change the color of the water.
It's best to test the products yourself and find out for yourself whether it makes sense for your flowers.
Alternatively, you can also use tricks to ensure that the cut flowers stay fresh longer.
For example, vodka or low temperatures are said to work wonders.
Proper pruning can also extend the lifespan of tulips, lilies or roses.
