- STRASBOURG - The European Chamber has given the definitive green light to the reform of the EU rules regulating the protection of Geographical Indications (GIs) for wine, alcoholic beverages and agricultural products.
The new regulation, whose rapporteur was the MEP Paolo De Castro, passed with 520 votes in favor, 19 against and 64 abstentions and also contains measures to protect Geographical Indications online, and give greater powers to producers by simplifying the process of GI registration.
A further milestone in defense of our excellence was achieved today with the vote in Europe on the approval of the reform of the Geographical Indications system". Thus the Minister of Agriculture, Food Sovereignty and Forestry, Francesco Lollobrigida, comments on the vote of the EP .
"The objective of the new regulation - specifies the minister - is to defend certified products from attempts at imitation and emulation. We must continue to focus on the quality and excellence that has always characterized us and on the distinctiveness that makes our products so special agri-food production to the point of becoming unique on the global market.
It is essential - concludes Lollobrigida - to defend our producers and the Italian system". Satisfaction with the vote is also expressed, among others, by Federdoc, Assolatte and Coldiretti.
