The arms embargo on Israel was canceled

On May 25, 1950, at 6:00 pm, a joint US, UK and France joint proclamation was published in Washington, London and Paris: ; DS), in order to ensure internal order and legal protection. "

In Israel, a huge sigh of relief was released in the leadership and in the military, not only because of the ban on the sale of arms (embargo) to the country, but also because of the significant addition of words to the three powers declaration that "they will act against the second round" - a concept that at the same time mitigated Israel's major concerns Another war against Arab countries, when the young country was absorbed in the big immigration factory.

"The Declaration of Powers is the guarantee of our country's borders," responded Prime Minister David Ben-Gurion when the news reached Israel.

The opposition, for its part, quickly demanded that the declaration of the three powers be immediately discussed in the Knesset, "to stabilize the ranks and prevent deviation from Israel's 'non-identification' policy with one of the blocs," as Mafam claimed, "fearing that the statement was trying to get Israel into the Western bloc via back door".

A few days after the statement was issued, Israel turned to the Powers to request clarification regarding its practical part - the actual supply of arms to Israel. For months now, the US government's decision-making table has been on Israel's request to purchase a series of weapons - which have not yet been answered. The United Kingdom, until the day the statement was issued, also refused to accept the list of Israel's weapons needs.

Only France, in the first phase, agreed to provide Israel with "Mosquito" planes, which arrived in Israel in 1951, but were inferior in size because they were piston aircraft. In 1953, the United Kingdom followed France and supplied Israel with Gluster Meteor jet aircraft, which was the first time that the State of Israel purchased new aircraft from the production line, rather than used aircraft.

Eat well at "Ga'atun Strasse": Nahariya flourishes in austerity

"If you visited Nahariya in 1948 and come back for a visit today - it is doubtful you will recognize the place," wrote the author of the "Davar" newspaper, which traveled from Tel Aviv to survey what was happening in the northern locality, which at that time became very popular with many citizens. He added that "Israelis from all over the country are invading Nahariya at the rate of a flood watchman in Gaaton."

Nahariya has doubled its population since the establishment of the state, and in May 1950, when it was 15 years old, about 3,500 people lived there. Beyond being a pleasant and pleasant community with a clean population who kept order and cleanliness, there was another reason for the attractiveness of the place: In Nahariya restaurants, you could order unlimited, eggs, chicken, milk, cream, meat and more - basic products in the rest of the country, due Austerity, there is usually a shortage in them.

"I eat eggs here every day as a psychic, here it is heaven," he praised Arno Brokenstein, who came to Nahariya from Tel Aviv. "I've been here for two weeks - and I've already gained (increased; DS) beautiful weight!"

Every day, vacationers came to Nahariya, and at the bus stop there, a booth was set up to inform those of the many pensions that have sprung up in the town in no time. Most of the guests preferred to stay in one of the accommodations along the "Gaaton Strasse", the German alias affection for Gaaton Avenue, and immediately went on a tour of the locality, making sure to send enviable postcards to relatives in the center of the country.

Stress and violence between the driving teachers

The driving school market in the State of Israel of May 1950 was fraught with the problem: demand for driving studies in Tel Aviv was increasing, with 30 driving schools operating in the city, while in Jerusalem the number of applicants to study driving remained limited and the five schools in the city remained unemployed for part of the day.

In order to ease the burden on Tel Aviv's driving teachers and testers, and with a desire to assist the Jerusalem schools, a decision was made in the National Organization of Driving Schools, which Tel Aviv driving students can test in Jerusalem. The condition was that the Tel Aviv test should arrive in Jerusalem a few hours before the test date, connect with a Jerusalem driving instructor, pay for a driving lesson on the city streets - and take the test in the Jerusalem driving vehicle.

The arrangement worked well for several months, until the Jerusalem teachers whose colleagues from Tel Aviv exceeded the agreement, and in fact did a combination on them: The Tel Aviv teacher would arrive in his vehicle at the licensing office in Jerusalem and transfer four students there to bring his vehicle from Tel Aviv. That is how the Jerusalemites remained jobless again.

From here to the heat of the wind the road was short. Indeed, on May 28, 1950, a student-driven Tel Aviv driving school arrived in Jerusalem on its way to the licensing office, but this time it encountered an ambush put forward by the Jerusalem driving teachers.

A brawl soon developed, during which the Tel Aviv teacher was beaten vigorously, until a police car passing by stopped the commotion. The injured driver was taken to treatment at Shaare Zedek Hospital on Jaffa Street, while other police forces called to the scene opened scans to locate the battered Jerusalem teachers.

"Danger to private construction"

Chairman of the Israeli Private Builders Association, Elimelech Schwartzman, wrote to Prime Minister David Ben-Gurion a letter detailing the problems facing private contractors - and, according to him, threaten to eliminate the private construction industry in the country. Schwarzman complained. The union threatened that if there was no change - "Subscribe and close with us to close the private construction plant and send the workers to the Bureau of Labor."

The blind were the guides

At a soldier's committee meeting in Jerusalem on May 25, 1950, a group of blind soldiers, victims of the War of Independence, reported on a guided tour of the combat zones attended by the soldiers. According to the report, despite their disabilities, the blind men insisted on planning their own itinerary and submitted a route that included winding, footpaths and highways. On the ground it became clear that sighted guides were confused with navigation, and in response the blind soldiers took command, guided the route from their memory - and even added learned lectures at each stop. In summary, the roadmasters were amazed at the functioning of the blind group.

Kiosk cooperative

Two kiosks in Haifa, which worked closely together, over the years have become accustomed to fighting the attention of passers-by and complaining against each other to municipal officials whenever one of them sold unusual products. Until in May 1950, the owners of both kiosks massed in the perpetual quarrel and decided to declare "Sulha" and enter into a partnership as a cooperative. The two immediately approached the municipality and were given permission to demolish the wall that separated the two kiosks.

A small BMW made by BMW, designed for two passengers. Creating motor hybrids known in the country as a "moving cell", and in the "rolling egg" world. The Isetta engine produced only 12 kW, and the passenger compartment was entered through a door at the front. The car began selling in Europe in the mid-1950s, and in Israel from the mid-1960s, when diplomatic relations with Germany began to be established. Very much among car collectors.

Slide show

Before the age of computer and Power Point, it was the usual way to present at meetings or lectures. The slide show was a cumbersome, heavy-duty optical device that projected a light beam through a magnifying lens, a transparent bezel and a mirror mounted at an angle. The presentation editors would place on the board the slides that contained text, images, maps, and other relevant visual information, and these would be projected by magnification, through the mirror, on the opposite wall or screen. Each slide was placed in place manually, a process that took precious time.

Expanding prices in the railway cafeteria

In May 1950, the newspapers published complaints from citizens about the price confiscation of the Israeli Railroad cars (in photography, 1950). For example, Joseph Fresman of Haifa claimed that "the price of orange juice, popsicle or sandwich is twice and even higher than the street kiosk." An original explanation was given from the train: "Unlike ordinary cars, the buffet trailer weighs no less than 40 tons. The prices of the food and sweet foods in the buffet embody the extra cost required to operate this special trailer."
