Moosburg is aiming for the title of “bicycle-friendly municipality” - and has now proven with certification that it has good cards.

But there are also downsides.

Moosburg

- In recent years, the Moosburg city council has always kept an eye on cyclists when planning new plans and improving the infrastructure.

Now the commitment is bearing fruit, because Moosburg is expected to be named a “bicycle-friendly municipality” in January.

A commission that has taken a close look at the city of three roses will make the long-awaited recommendation.

The evaluation of Moosburg consisted of two parts.

In the summer there was already a digital presentation in which the city presented its efforts to ensure safe and comfortable cycling.

The city tour followed on Thursday, during which representatives of the municipality and a commission visited important places where the situation for cyclists is good

Various factors played a role in the assessment - including the condition and comfort of bicycle parking spaces such as here in front of the Sparkasse.

(+) New bike racks

Right at the start of the tour, 3rd Mayor Michael Stanglmaier (Greens) was able to present the past and future of the bicycle parking facilities.

Opposite, at the town hall, there is still an old stand that does not look nice and offers little comfort for cyclists.

In front of the Sparkasse, Stanglmaier - himself a passionate cyclist - showed the commission the new hangers, which are intended to make life more pleasant for users.

The bicycle parking spaces in the area of the train station were also examined carefully.

There, the city representatives showed that the square should be expanded.

(By the way: Everything from the region is now also available in our regular Freising newsletter.)

(+) Bicycle zone

A particularly positive example of Moosburg's efforts is a bicycle zone in the vicinity of Graf-Konrad-Strasse, which forms a network of several bicycle streets.

This form, in which cycling is in the foreground, is an action with which Moosburg is taking a pioneering role.

(-) Downtown

The cobblestones in the city center, on the other hand, annoy many citizens: From rollator to bicycle users, numerous population groups suffer from the uncomfortable and sometimes dangerous road surface.

"Cobblestones are the problem that we have to get under control step by step," said Mayor Josef Dollinger.

He referred to the already decided conversion of the square “Am Plan” and the will to implement further measures for traffic calming and an improvement of the subsoil.

(-) BayWa intersection

For cyclists in particular, the heavily frequented BayWa intersection between the train station and the school center is a danger area where accidents have already occurred in the past.

Melanie Falkenstein, the city's climate protection manager, makes it clear that improvements are already being made and that the area should be addressed in the near future.

The bottom line

The commission did not expect the perfect bicycle city, but was very impressed with what they saw.

It was positively assessed that the city has been striving for improvements for years.

That is why the nomination “bike-friendly city” is proposed and will probably also be carried out at the end of January.

The city will then bear the title for seven years - until it is re-certified.

"This title is an obligation to stay tuned to the topic," said Melanie Falkenstein.

Third Mayor Michael Stanglmaier and his fellow city council member and member of the state parliament, Johannes Becher, also made it clear that cycling in Moosburg is a central issue for the local parliament until 2026.
