Opinion | This housing solution is here Israel today

2022-07-10T10:37:45.256Z

The town where I live is about a 20-minute drive from Kfar Saba. Many of the people who are willing to live in Moshav Hasharon will happily agree to live in Ma'ale Shomron, almost the same distance from the city

I remember driving all the way from the small town in Samaria to the big city of Tel Aviv to see the demonstrations about housing prices in the summer of 2011. I was 17 years old.

Not only the masses of protesters but also the broad media interest are remembered.

There was no media outlet that did not cover the event daily.

Today, however, neither the protesters nor the media are present.

The demonstration remained the domain of a few dozen people.

Many understand that it is impossible to justify the insistence on living in the center of the center and further accepting the apartment at a key price.

It is impossible to explain the grievances about housing prices in Tel Aviv, while at Ben Gurion Airport there are huge queues of Israelis who prefer to invest their money in vacations abroad.

Today it is already clear, the solution is not in Tel Aviv, and people are not in a hurry to support those who are not willing to accept it.

But then, 11 years ago, I went with my friends to the Betar youth movement on Rothschild Boulevard between the tents, and my heart went out to those people who could not pay rent.

Even then I realized that it is not that simple - some can pay rent, just not on Rothschild Boulevard, and maybe, mercifully, outside Tel Aviv - but well, well.

While wandering between the tents and protest signs, one of the people in my group started singing a simple song, just four words that contained so much meaning and logic.

There is a solution - Judea and Samaria.

In Judea and Samaria there are many unused state areas.

Areas that are not privately owned, but still in the name of "sensitivity" we do not build on.

These are areas defined as Area C, such that under the Oslo Accords signed by the Palestinian Authority, are under the complete control of Israel.

Their development can not only strengthen Israel in terms of security and settlement, but also make housing in Israel cheaper.

It's a matter of a simple economy - if supply increases, price will fall.

For example, the locality I live in is located about twenty minutes drive from Kfar Saba.

Many of the people who are willing to live in Moshav Hasharon will happily agree to live in Ma'ale Shomron, almost the same distance from the city, and will reduce the demand in Sharon and Gush Dan.

In order to encourage people to leave the areas of demand and move to Judea and Samaria and the periphery, the State of Israel will have to invest in upgrading the almost non-existent public transportation in the area.

Good public transportation will allow people not only to get out of areas of demand, but to get to work on public transportation and ease the congestion on the roads.

The only apparent reason why this all-too-direct solution has not yet been implemented is that people are still accustomed to seeing settlers as temporary residents, such that in the blink of an eye their denial of civil rights can be discussed.

But the people are not buying it anymore.

The people are going to the right, it is difficult to ignore this fact, Israelis support settlement in all parts of the country, even those who do not understand that all the residents of the settlements will not be evacuated.

Not only because it is not right, but because it will not bring peace, will only bring the missiles closer to the center.

There are no more excuses and reasons not to build more in Judea and Samaria.

The people are ideologically ready for this and the economy is thirsty for it.

There is no other choice.

You can almost hear the same recitation from 2011 until now, there is a solution - Judea and Samaria.

Were we wrong?

Fixed!
