The main fire station in Freising was a magnet for visitors on Sunday: around 10,000 fire brigade fans big and small came to the open day.

Freising

– After seven years, the time has come again this year: the Freising Volunteer Fire Department (FFW) invited to an open day in the main fire station.

However, the picture that presented itself from Sunday afternoon on the area in Dr.-von-Daller-Straße surprised everyone involved.

The reason: the Florian's disciples in the cathedral city were literally overrun by crowds of visitors.

Extrapolated, according to FFW commander Oliver Sturde, there could have been around 10,000 guests who used the spring-like day for a trip to the police station.

Rally tickets gone after an hour

The Florian disciple and good soul of the event, Florian Wöhrl, made a simple calculation: "The stamp cards for the children, with which they could take part in a fire brigade rally, were all gone after an hour." Of course, the FFW Freising was there expected a high rush, but this open day broke all records.

"That's totally insane.

We were totally overrun," Wöhrl continued.

In order to be able to cover the enormous demand for people to ride in a fire engine, a second vehicle was put into operation at short notice.

(By the way: everything from the region is now also available in our regular Freising newsletter.)

In fact, by 1 p.m. at the latest, there was more or less a folk festival atmosphere on the weir site - with a queue in front of the food distribution area that was as long as the entire main building.

"It's totally overwhelming for us," explained Sturde, who was of course delighted that so many people were interested in being able to look "behind the scenes".

“At the end of January we made the decision to hold an open day again this year.

We've been working on it for two months," the commander continued.

100 firefighters showed their work

Around 100 Florian's disciples worked everywhere, supervised demonstrations, explained a lot and shone with iron stamina.

Honorary Commander Anton Frankl was also enthusiastic: "Of course, it's totally exciting for outsiders - and above all, the weather is wonderful." Because although it was still drizzling at first, the sun came out at midday - the perfect weather for demonstrations of all kinds.

While fires could be fought with a normal fire extinguisher in the outer area of the station, a gigantic jet of flame suddenly shot up into the sky a few meters away.

The reason: A Florian's disciple had poured a glass of water into a hot pan with oil to demonstrate.

The Müller family from Zolling was also impressed by this with mum Irene, dad Paul and their two children Valentin (5) and Paula (7).

After a guided tour of the station, watching the thermal imaging search for injured people and a visit to the "hose tower", the four of them had one thing at the forefront - namely to strengthen themselves with fries and a cool drink.

Emergency vehicles and vintage cars as eye-catchers

Max Bittrich (9), on the other hand, wanted to finish the children's rally, because the prize was a chic lunch box from the "Blaues Wunder".

On Sunday, Max was traveling with a real expert, namely his brother Lukas (18), who has been with FFW Mauern for six years.

What many still wanted to see: the THL operation in a traffic accident and an interior attack.

An eye-catcher throughout the day were the numerous emergency vehicles, the turntable ladder and the station's vintage cars.

At 5 p.m. the gates of the Freising fire station closed again for the visitors.

The next open day will probably take place in two years, at least according to Sturde.
